What to prepare before a device repair

A short preparation guide for a clearer assessment and fewer missing details.

Write down the fault

Record when the issue began, what changed before it, and which functions still work. Include the exact model and previous damage or repair. If the fault is intermittent, describe the conditions that reproduce it rather than just saying the device is broken.

Example: a clearer fault description

“The laptop stops charging after it has been running for a while” gives the assessment more context than “battery broken.” Add the model, the charger used, when the symptom started, and whether it happens every time. Keep that account with any earlier repair history. This preparation guide is about collecting observations; the assessment and quote determine which work, if any, should proceed.

Your checklist

  • Model and symptom timeline
  • Previous damage or work
  • Backup and contact details
